Heat recovery Utilising waste heat from data centres. Reusing waste heat Heat recovery, alongside using renewable energy, is one of the key tools for reducing carbon dioxide emissions generated by data centers and laying the foundations for a sustainable business model. This solution increases a facility’s energy efficiency while simultaneously reducing its carbon footprint. Heat recovery involves using warm air generated by IT equipment contained in server rooms. Waste heat is transported through pipes using a heat pump and used to heat water or indoor spaces. Our goal Our goal in this area is to maximize the reuse of waste thermal energy generated by operating the IT infrastructure. We pursue this through internal projects and collaboration with external partners. Our activities External project with Veolia Energia Poznań Internal project In October 2024, Veolia Energia Poznan and Beyond.pl began a partnership to recover heat for the municipal district heating network. A state-of-the-art installation for recovering waste heat will be developed as part of the project. A key element of the system will be integrating high-density servers with heat pumps, enabling efficient thermal energy transfer to the city’s heating network. Thanks to this technology, residents and commercial-industrial facilities in Poznan will access a low-emission thermal energy source. Initial plans indicate that the new installation in the southeastern part of the city will reach a capacity of around 30 MW, reducing CO₂ emissions by up to 52,500 tons per year and decreasing water consumption by approximately 76,500 m³ annually. This is the first initiative in Poland to combine a data center operator with a district heating provider on such a large scale. The project supports the green transition and strengthens the region’s energy security by delivering heat without using fossil fuels. You can read more about the project HERE. In 2016, when Data Center 2 was commissioned, we implemented an internal heat recovery project. The thermal energy generated in the data halls is used during winter to heat the Beyond.pl office building. The project aligns with the principles of the circular economy and supports the sustainable management of resources. It helps reduce energy losses, improves energy efficiency and contributes to reducing the carbon footprint associated with the operation of our infrastructure. Contact us
